田辺太一蓮舟のつぶやき(twitter)　翁の著書：幕末外交談から(5-2)

最初の訪問国で頭を叩かれたたと前ブログで書きました。書記官長をしていた田邉（辺）太一は、これを見てさぞや溜飲が下がったでしょう。仮に大久保や伊藤が幕府時代の外交担当者だったとしたら、もっと日本に不利な条約を締結していただろうと思っていたからです。幕府外交官だった太一は、制約条件が多い中にあって大きな成果を挙げたという自負があったからです。

In the former blog, I wrote, 'The leaders of Iwakura delegation were hit at their head, when they visited U.S.A, the first visiting country'. I imagine that Taichi Tanabe was satisfied to see them. He must have thought, "If Okujbo and Ito were at the helm of foreign affairs of Tokugawa Government, they would have concluded worse treaty than actually done." Taichi had a big self-confidence that he had done very well as one of the officers of foreign affairs of Tokugawa government.
